Prepare to Be a Voter
 
Local elections on May 3 include races for Collin College trustees, as well as mayor, city council, and ISD trustees throughout Collin County! Local elections have a big impact on our community and daily lives on issues such as transportation, infrastructure, housing, education, safety, and finances.
 
LWV-CC is preparing for these elections by producing nonpartisan Voters Guides and candidate forum videos. LWV never supports or opposes a political party or candidate. Our mission is to provide unbiased information so voters can make informed decisions on which candidates best represent their interests. If you would like to submit question suggestions for our candidate forums for contested races in McKinney, Plano, and Collin College, send them by March 23 to LWVCollin.forum@gmail.com.
 
Use the following checklist to make sure you are prepared to be a voter in the May 3 elections:
 

Celebrating 50 Years of the League of Women Voters of Collin County

Join us for our 50th Anniversary Celebration at BarnHill Vineyards!
 
It’s hard to believe the League of Women Voters has been accomplishing our mission of 'Empowering voters. Defending democracy.' for 50 years!
 
Meg Titus founded the Collin County League in 1974. We will be celebrating this achievement by recognizing people who have been core to our mission in the past year.
 
BarnHill Vineyards is a scenic venue in the Anna, Texas countryside. The facility accommodates all weather conditions. If it's cold or raining we will be inside the “barn” with heaters. If the weather is nice we can wander the grounds and sit outside. BarnHill Vineyards serves Texas varietal wine from grapes all over Texas. Your ticket includes wine and non-alcoholic drinks. We will be entertained by Standards Gazette, a North Texas duo playing guitar and singing our favorites.
 
Spring Creek Barbeque will provide your favorite meat and sides buffet dinner. Central Market will be providing light appetizers and desserts!
 
And finally, we will be playing some LWV trivia!
 
Our silent auction includes:

Join us from 2:30 - 4:30 on Saturday, April 12, at Haggard Library in Plano for Socializing and Civics!
 
Liz Holland, LWV-CC member and LWVTX Women's Health Advocacy Chair, will discuss women's reproductive rights, including abortion, and what the current legislative session addresses.

Book Club Updated
Book Club
 
All are invited to the League of Women Voters of Collin County Book Club on Wednesday, May 14, from 7:00-8:00. We will meet on Zoom to discuss First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston.

Survey Opportunity About Transportation Needs
 
The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) staff will update Access North Texas, the Regional Public Transportation Coordination Plan. Access North Texas, updated every four years, documents the transportation needs of older adults, people with disabilities, individuals with lower income, and others who may be experiencing transportation-related challenges.
 
If you fall into any of the categories listed above, or would like to provide your opinions on public transportation in the North Texas area, you can access the survey here.

The 89th Texas Legislature is in session from January 14 through June 2. Contact your elected officials about legislation that is of interest to you.
