March Member Update

Presidents' Message
from Janet Imhoff and Ian Seamans

We had two important and interesting programs in February – Collin County Elections Administrator Kaleb Breaux spoke to us about the Elections Office and the administration of elections, and Louis Bedford IV spoke to attendees of our Socializing and Civics group about voting rights.

And now March holds two other very important events. We will discuss important questions about the Federal Judiciary on March 18, 6:30 pm at Haggard Library in Plano. This is part of a nationwide study sponsored by LWVUS, in which all Leagues will discuss the same questions and come to consensus on the issues. In this way, our national League will have a grassroots position on which they can lobby.

The second March event is our 50th Anniversary Celebration at Barnhill Vineyards near Anna, TX.  This Sunday afternoon event on March 30 will feature barbeque, music, a trivia contest, and an exciting silent auction.  Please come with your friends and enjoy the pastoral setting and a fun time.

See the articles on both of these events in this newsletter and sign up or buy tickets on our website, lwvcollin.org. I hope to see you at both of these important League functions.

Celebrating 50 Years of the League of Women Voters of Collin County
March 30 | 4:00 – 8:00 PM
BarnHill Vineyards, Anna, TX

Join us for our 50th Anniversary Celebration at BarnHill Vineyards!

It’s hard to believe the League of Women Voters has been accomplishing our mission of 'Empowering voters. Defending democracy.' for 50 years!

Meg Titus founded the Collin County League in 1974. We will be celebrating this achievement by recognizing people who have been core to our mission in the past year.

BarnHill Vineyards is a scenic venue in the Anna, Texas countryside.  The facility accommodates all weather conditions. If it's cold or raining we will be inside the “barn” with heaters.  If the weather is nice we can wander the grounds and sit outside.  BarnHill Vineyards serves Texas varietal wine from grapes all over Texas.  Your ticket includes wine and non-alcoholic drinks. Check out the venue here.

We will be entertained by Standards Gazette, a North Texas duo playing guitar and singing our favorites.

Spring Creek Barbeque will provide your favorite meat and sides buffet dinner. Central Market will be providing light appetizers and desserts!

And finally, we will be playing some LWV trivia!

Tickets are $55 - all are welcome. Invite your friends and family to our celebration! Please register by March 23, 2025.

May 3 Local Election Information Bookmarks

For every election LWV-CC delivers thousands of bookmarks to libraries with information about what’s on the ballot and how to access our nonpartisan Voters Guides on VOTE411 and our website. For the May 3 local election, which includes races for mayor, city council, ISD trustees, and Collin College trustees, we will have bookmarks for members to distribute to their friends, families and organizations. Come to one of our in-person meetings in March to pick up a supply of bookmarks!

Want an especially large number of bookmarks? Contact LWVCollin@gmail.com in advance of an event.

Register for the Federal Judiciary Consensus Meeting

Resources are now available for the Federal Judiciary Consensus Meeting. Click here to visit the LWVUS resources page. On it you will find the recording of the February 4 Town Hall, which answered members' questions, and the Policy Briefs for 10 aspects of the federal judiciary. The Policy Briefs are quick 1-2 page primers on aspects of the federal judiciary that will be relevant to our discussion. If you are interested in attending the Consensus Meeting, you may want to watch the town hall and/or read through some of the Policy Briefs, but it is not required to take part in the discussion.

On March 18 at 6:30 LWV-CC members will meet at the Haggard Library to consider questions for a Federal Judiciary Study. Register here to attend the meeting. This event is not sponsored by the Plano Public Library System or the City of Plano.

At the meeting, a moderator will present the questions for discussion and LWV-CC will pass on the meeting’s consensus for LWVUS’s consideration.

The study was prompted by league members’ interest as expressed at the national convention. Questions about Supreme Court ethics policies prompted the study and LWV members voted at the convention to expand the study beyond the Supreme Court to examine lower federal courts, as well. The goal is to develop a comprehensive policy on the judiciary, as LWVUS currently has no such policy.

Annual Meeting

Our annual meeting is coming up on Saturday, May 17, at 10:30.

Please plan to come to elect officers and directors, pass a budget and bylaws changes, and provide your input on our informational programs for our next League year. We are a grassroots organization, and we need your input.

More information will follow in our April newsletter.
