President's Message
 
Several board members just returned from the Biennial Texas LWV Convention. It was an inspiring three days hearing from other leagues across Texas that are facing challenges similar to those in Collin County. LWV has a long history of working to Empower Voters through education, registration, and outreach, while also Defending Democracy through advocacy and litigation.
 
Thanks to our many volunteers, we will continue to carry out this important mission. There continues to be mis/disinformation regarding our elections. You can always count on LWV to give you the facts. If you have any questions related to elections, please reach out to us at president@lwvcollin.org. Local Elections - May 2

Many cities and school districts will have elections for city council, mayor, and school board trustee. Some areas will also vote on propositions. If you didn't vote earlier, be sure to vote on Election Day, May 2, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  
 
Lunch with the League -  McKinney and Plano
 
Heads up! Our Plano and McKinney lunches are moving to new restaurants. Enjoy great conversation and connection at one of our upcoming LWV-CC buy-your-own social lunches. These events are open to all and provide a chance to discuss important issues while upholding the League’s nonpartisan policy of not supporting or opposing any candidate or political party. Feel free to bring a friend!

Book Club
 
All are invited to the League of Women Voters of Collin County Book Club on Wednesday, May 13, from 7:00-8:00. We will meet on Zoom to discuss The Women by Kristin Hannah.
 
We will share our nonpartisan thoughts on the book as well as various discussion questions. Register and receive the Zoom link. Members, please log in to the website before registering.
 
Food Security Forum 
 
A panel of local experts will address food security in Collin County, followed by the LWV-CC Annual Meeting on Saturday, May 16, at Schimelpfenig Library, 5024 Custer Road in Plano. The Food Security program will begin at 1 p.m., followed by a short break before the Annual Meeting begins at 3:00.
 
Registration for the forum is required. Members, please log in to the website before registering.

Annual Meeting
 
All are welcome at LWV-CC's annual meeting on Saturday, May 16, at Schimelpfenig Library, 5024 Custer Road in Plano. The meeting will begin at approximately 3:00 after a short break from the Food Security Forum. Members will elect officers and directors, and adopt a budget and local program.

Primary Runoff Election - May 26
Early Voting - May 18-22
 
Runoff elections will be held May 26 for primary races in which no candidate received more than 50 percent of the votes cast. The deadline to register to vote in the runoffs was April 27. If you voted in the March 3 Primary Election, you can only vote in the runoffs for the same party. Use the following checklist to prepare to be a voter!  
 
LWV Collin County Launches a Youth Council 
 
Recently, Srijan Singh, a student at Lebanon Trail High School in Frisco, reached out to us with the exciting idea of creating an LWV Youth Council. Srijan will lead this new council, which will consist of volunteer ambassadors from each of the 37 high schools in Collin County. Their focus will be on voter registration at each school, as well as educating students about elections and civic engagement.
 
Responsibilities of an Ambassador include:
  • Maintaining communication with the Youth Council and remaining in good standing
  • Establishing an LWV Youth Club at their school
  • Recruiting members and organizing tasks for their school, such as social media and club meetings
  • Hosting two annual voter registration drives at their school
  • Promoting LWV volunteer events and volunteering at two events each year
  • Teaching bi-monthly civics lessons at their school, whether as an after-school event, club meeting, or another format at the ambassador’s discretion
What Ambassadors receive:
  • Volunteer service hours
  • The opportunity to serve as club president
  • A letter of recommendation or referral from an LWV board member

DEI Workshop 
 
Members of LWV-CC are invited to monthly Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) zoom meetings to work collectively to strengthen the foundation of our mission: empowering voters and defending democracy. The league is fully committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in principle and in practice. The meetings are on the fourth Thursday of every month and the next meeting date is May 28 from 7-8 pm. No need to preregister. Join the zoom event.
