How Banning Books Undermines Democracy Video
This video of our September panel discussion is posted on our website!  It is an excellent discussion with three credentialed librarians on how reading helps us define our values, why books are challenged, and what censorship means for all of us. Thanks to Sharon Hirsch, Program VP, for conceiving of this important program, and asking such thoughtful questions to an expert panel.

December Holiday Meet-and-Greet
Who will we meet? Our newly elected representatives to the Texas Legislature! This will replace our Legislative Interviews, which we have done for the past several years. We want to have a fun party for all our members, and to invite our new state legislators, so we can hear about their priorities for the spring legislative session. We need your help to make this happen, so call or email me at janetimhofflwv@gmail.com to be part of the committee.

How Book Banning Undermines Democracy
Program Update

If you missed our September 20th program, “How Banning Books Undermines Democracy,” the recording is now ready to view on our YouTube channel. We were honored to have three extraordinary professionals join us for a discussion on how library collections are curated, intellectual and academic freedom, censorship, and what we can do to safeguard the freedom to read. Our guests gave thorough and thoughtful answers to our questions while sharing their professional expertise and experiences with listeners. Be sure to check it out!

Our next program will be a recap of the November 8th election with Bruce Sherbet, Collin County Elections Administrator. Stay tuned for further information regarding the date and time of this event.

We have a terrific schedule of events planned this LWV year. If you’re interested in helping out with any of our programs, please complete our survey.

Volunteers Needed!

We need volunteers like you to help further our mission of making democracy work! No experience is necessary, and the board will support you in your position.

  •  Voter Registration Co-Chair – You and an awesome Co-Chair will plan voter registration events at locations like high schools, Collin College, and senior living facilities.
  • Fundraising Chair – You and your committee will choose fundraising activities to pursue throughout the year.
  • Holiday Party Chair – We would like to hold a holiday meet and greet for members with our state legislators. You and your committee will plan the event.

If you would like to find out more about any of these roles, please send email to Janet Imhoff at lwvcollin@gmail.com.

Advocacy Opportunities
Become an Issue Chair!
Every biennium, the League of Women Voters of Texas actively engages Texas Legislators on issues that matter to the League and to the state of Texas. The Upcoming 88th session of the Texas Legislature will be no different.

The League speaks with one voice in order to harness the power of our collective voices and votes. We speak to positions developed through careful study and consensus over the years. As in the past and in alignment with the LWVUS and Leagues in all fifty states, our number one priority will be Voting Rights and Election Law. Additionally, we believe that speaking to bills that address Gun Safety and Women’s Health and Reproductive Rights will be essential in this session.

There are many other important issues that League can, has and will wish to speak to. To do so, we need members from around the state to help us follow bills as they come up and help us prepare Testimony, Letters to the Editor, and Action Alerts.

Areas where we need coverage include Money in Politics, Financing the State Government, Children’s issues (Early childhood, Child Abuse/Neglect, Child Health), Criminal Justice (domestic violence, drug policies, and juvenile justice), Health Care and Immigration.

Any member interested in becoming an issue chair please contact Elisabeth MacNamara, Advocacy Chair, at emacnamara@lwvtexas.org.

You don’t have to live in the Austin Area to make a big difference during the upcoming legislative session!
