State Program Planning

Join us on Thursday, January 4, from 6:00-6:30 pm on Zoom to discuss which positions the state League should prioritize in its advocacy over the next two years. Register here to receive the Zoom link. View a summary of the LWVTX positions. Attendees may bring their ideas about which positions should receive the most advocacy attention, or just discuss others' recommendations and learn more about program planning in the League. After discussion, the board will send a proposal to the state League and make a recommendation to our state convention delegates.

Delegates from local Leagues vote on priorities for the state League's public policy advocacy every two years at the state convention. We refer to these priorities as our "program." Program aligns the League behind a set of priorities which strengthens our advocacy and increases our visibility. As a grassroots organization, we engage members throughout the process of planning our program.

In providing input, members should consider:
  • Where can the League be most effective?
  • In the issue areas where the League can be most effective, do we have member understanding of the issue area and member agreement as to the public policy recommendations in the issue area (do we have a position on the priority issue)?
  • After reviewing our principles and positions, are updates needed to priority positions that will allow the League to be more effective in the priority issue?
In addition to the priorities we will be discussing at the state program planning meeting, members may also bring other proposals for changes to the state League's positions. Visit the LWVTX website to learn more about the options for proposing new or amended positions. View the full list of LWVTX positions.

Over the past two decades, the League has been most effective in defending democracy against voter suppression at the state and local level. That work is far from finished. The Making Democracy Work campaign is the League's current nationwide program, which includes advocating for voter rights, improving elections, creating a fair redistricting process, reducing the influence of money in politics, and abolishing the Electoral College. It has been a years long project that has increased our relevance because it draws on our deep roots in the suffrage movement. It also requires us to apply a DEI lens to all the work we do strengthening our message and increasing support for the League.

LWVTX Program Planning will be Thursday, January 4, at 6 pm. Register here! (Members must log in first)
