President's Message

 from Janet Imhoff

Happy New Year!

2024 will be a very big year for League and for all of us – very important elections with Primaries in March and the Presidential election in November.  In addition we will have the LWV Texas biennial convention in Dallas in April and the LWVUS convention in June.

Our Collin County League is very busy too.  This month we will have a Zoom program on Payday Lending – what it is, why we are concerned, and what the Texas legislature has done to change it.  See the article below and don’t miss it on January 18, 7 PM.  Please register on our website.

Then on February 1, at 6 PM, we will meet again on Zoom to consider our local League program positions and what we want to learn about next year.  See the article below and please plan to come.  We need your input!

Thanks so much for your interest and support of League.

Janet

Payday and Auto Title Lending Forum

The League of Women Voters of Collin County will facilitate a panel discussion on payday and auto title lending to be held on Thursday, January 18th, at 7 pm via Zoom. Our panel of experts will educate attendees on the harms of these products and the history of efforts to curb these predatory practices, provide members with information on what LWV has done to support reform efforts and how they can support future advocacy efforts, and share what advocates expect to focus on during the 2025 legislative session and beyond.

Register for this event by clicking here. Members, remember to log in before signing up.

Prepare to be a Voter!

The Democratic and Republican party primary elections will be held on March 5, with early voting from February 20 to March 1. The Libertarian and Green parties choose candidates at conventions. You may only participate in one party's selection process.
Prepare to be a voter!

Local Program Planning 2024/2025

In the League, program is the education and advocacy platform adopted by members to empower voters and defend democracy.

Every February, LWV-CC members may participate in a local program planning meeting to propose topics for study or action in the next LWV-CC year. This year's meeting is February 1 from 6:00-6:30pm. Click here to register.

One or more of the following options can be proposed for the 2024/2025 program:

  • Host an informational public forum regarding a subject in the coming year
  • Create an action plan related to a local, state, or national position
  • Initiate the study of a topic by a committee in order to build consensus around a new position that could be adopted in a future year
  • Charge a committee with reviewing and updating a local position to be voted on at the next year's annual meeting
  • Amend a position with a minor change to wording
  • Adopt another local League's position by concurrence

The board votes on program recommendations made at the meeting, then the LWV-CC membership votes on the program at the Annual Meeting in May. Non-recommended program items can be proposed by members at the Annual Meeting, but must be seconded to be voted upon.
